Do you want to do it yourself? This is the question every homeowner needs to ask when starting a project. It can save money. It can sidestep the trouble of setting up appointments and dealing with cancellations and emergency rescheduling. It can even be perfectly adequate … sometimes.
Do you want to do it yourself? More often than not, a DIY (do-it-yourself) job is not done properly. It may function, but unless it’s installed and set up by an advanced hobbyist in their own field of interest, there is no substitute for a professional job. A surround sound system might not be optimized for the room, a TV might be mounted on the wall inadequately, a music system might be more than what’s needed or less than what’s needed, and a network might be spotty and slow. Smart home devices might be continually falling offline. There are electrical and fire codes a home or business owner might know nothing about. There are best practices for running wires to minimize interference and maximize performance. There is specialized equipment that is designed for a niche that only a pro would know about. And there is a caliber of neatness that’s hard to duplicate if you haven’t had the experience of doing it over and over again until it’s become second nature.
Do you want to do it yourself? Do you even have the time? Is it a good use of your time to be head and shoulders inside a cabinet trying to figure out where to plug in that HDMI? When your smart thermostat says it requires a C wire, but there isn’t one in the wall, how much research and how much trial and error are you willing to deal with to find a solution … and then how much time are you willing to fiddle with it when the solution you found doesn’t work? When the picture on your new TV just flashes on and off, or doesn’t show at all, how much time are you willing to spend fixing it instead of enjoying your shows? None of these things are insurmountable; even the pros sometimes have to Google it or get more equipment. But they are doing it for you while you are earning your living or relaxing by the pool.
